Kettering School District Finds Sarnafils Décor
System
Is Just the Right Fit!
Larry
Richter, Project Architect at Edge & Tinney in Dayton, Ohio
had a roofing dilemma trying to design the Kettering School District
proposed new Greenmont Elementary School. Original design proposal
drawings for the building showed the school with a barrel rolled
roof lines that resembled those of an aircraft hanger similar to
buildings at nearby Wright Patterson Air Force Base.
While the school officials thought the design looked great, there
was concern about costs and long term water tightness of a barrel
roll metal roof system. Larry decided to call Tony Albanese of Seward
Sales.
Tony had been in the offices of Edge and Tinney earlier and left
samples of Sarnafil Roofings Décor System, whose heat
weld seams, on a variety of colored membranes, gave the design flexibility
of a monolithic single ply membrane. The Décor System insured
long term watertight integrity while at the same time giving the
aesthetic appeal of the appearance standing seam metal.
Larry asked Tony and Sarnafil Educational Specialist, Tom Sandy,
to be involved with the design process in the early stages. All
three met with Dick Russell, Construction Projects Manager for Kettering
School District and Paul Marcum, the Owners Rep. to familiarize
them with Sarnafils revolutionary concept.
Larry, Paul and Dick all liked the fact that Sarnafil membranes
had a virtually unchanged formula over a 40 plus year period and
was a roofing membrane that needed very little maintenance. They
liked the fact that Sarnafil Roofing membranes had on going performance
records of keeping buildings dry year in and year out, with many
roofs still performing 25 years and beyond, worldwide, with a product
& reputation that was second to none. They were impressed that
only the highest quality of roofers were trained and certified to
install Sarnafil. They liked the fact that Sarnafil tech reps were
on each job to help out with in the field problems and assist in
making sure the Sarnafil System is installed for optimum water tightness
and long lasting performance.
A decision was made to put Sarnafils Décor system in
as a fully adhered single ply alternate to conventional standing
seam metal. School officials were pleasantly surprised when the
bids came in and the Décor system not only could give the
new school watertight integrity and aesthetic appeal, but also saved
them a substantial amount of money over standing seam metal, money
that could be used in other areas of the school.
Sarnafil certified roofing company, Command Roofing of Dayton was
chosen to install the system. Command Roofing was looking for another
Décor system to install, having just recently installed the
Sarnafil colored membrane system on the New Dixie High School in
New Lebanon,Ohio and a Décor profile system on the new Shelhouse
Office Building in Dayton. After conferring with the owners and
the design architect, Gary Martin of Command proposed that the entire
roofing system, including the flat roofs, be done out of Sarnafil
membrane. The building owner liked the piece of mind that came with
the same material being used on the entire school and the same manufacturer
issuing a warranty on the entire roofing system.
The flat, lo-slope areas of the new school had a poured Elastizell
celluar lightweight insulated concrete deck system, and the barrel
rolled portion of the roof had a metal deck with foam board insulation.
The roofing part of the project started in the middle of the winter.
Jeff Chase, Command Roofings Project Superintendent on the
jobsite said, Because of Sarnafils flexibility in any
kind of weather, It was a plus to be able to work on the roof many
days that they would have not been otherwise able to, had they used
a more conventional roofing system. Mike Davis, of Command
Roofing said, Sarnafils was easy to work with and was
easy to detail around mechanical units and other roof protrusions,
which makes for a very clean, neat looking finish overall.
The new Kettering Greenmont Elementary School roofing project was
finished in August 2005, just in time for the new school year.
